Student Work

A Poetic Review of Virtually the 1960s
by Gabrielle Hooks

A war is a dark period in time
So dark it is hard to rewind.
Bombs were ticking.
Presidents influenced the war like
Johnson, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nixon

Increased war materials increased jobs,
Many lives lost causing many sobs.
A hootch, tunnel rats, and head gaps.
That post-traumatic stress always
made its way back.

The no-remorse and bombs,
Back then, chaos was Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh
Communist hears he was trying to mend.
I still don't get how in the 20th century
war was a trend

So much more in store
Hippies tried to prevent war
Tie-dye shirts
wanting peace
from the South, North, West and East.

Throughout the world
for little boys and girls.
This time in history
was as cold as snow.
Like the laws of Jim Crow.

Blacks didn't have equal rights
They were fed up beginning to fight.
Being rebellious had many
consequences some fatal
It was hard to save them

March after March
Boycott after Boycott
Blood after Blood
Murder after Murder
Tears after Tears
Was help near?

Even the skies weren't clean
But America opened their eyes
When Martin Luther King said:
“I have a dream.”
Jim Crow laws were cruel
Blacks and whites together
couldn't even attend school.

The 60's just weren't the needles
A lot of entertainment like the Beatles.
A lot of people like to dance and sing-along
To jamming songs.

In 1964, blacks could not be
discriminated against
Our fight worked
It was our defense.
Things started to calm and re-define
Vietnam War ended in April '75.

Henry Ford Museum
American Studies @ Henry Ford Museum

American Studies students got some tips on the best-of-the-best museum exhibits while touring Henry Ford Museum.  Students focused in on the "For Liberty and Justice for All" exhibit as part of their study of the Civil Rights Movement.  They will be creating their own virtual museums about the 1960s during the next couple weeks.

ST. Patty's Day and WNT is so LUCKY!
NEW TECH PRIDE!

WNT has a lot to be proud of this week.   The Bulldog Varsity basketball team (made up of all but 4 New Tech students) has made it to the next round of playoffs.   Our students are excelling in classes and being class acts.  Our juniors are eagerly finding ways to attend a financial park field trip,  American Studies rolled out the 1960s,  World Studies created virtual magazines, and two teachers offered themselves up to be doused in silly string to support fundraising efforts.

American Studies grooves on into the 1960s

Entry Event:  WNT Roller skate diner:  "Serving entry docs to wet your appetite for knowledge."
Groovy "Moonbeam" led a sing-a-long of 1960s songs while "Ruby" the rollerskating waitress served students entry docs and rubrics to "dine on" for their Knows and Need-to-Knows .
Record Breaking Kick!
CONGRATULATIONS Justin Fisher!

Justin Fisher set a new tournament record in the high kick board breaking event.  His highest kick broke a board at 8 feet, 7.5 inches above the ground, shattering the previous tournament record of 8 feet, 1 inch. Four students from the Westwood Taekwondo Club participated in the 2012 Plymouth Salvation Army Inter-Club Martial Arts Tournament on Saturday, March 3rd.
